The Knicks finally got the player they wanted in the draft. Introducing Jordan Hill. As much as I would like to say I like the Knicks selection with the 8th pick I really can’t. Don’t get me wrong, Jordan Hill is a good role player. Hill is a powerforward that can rebound and play some defense. However he is not what the Knicks need right now. The Knicks needed to draft either a point guard or shooting guard. The right pick for the Knicks should have been Brandon Jennings, Demar DeRozan, or Terrence Williams. It looked like on draft night Donnie Walsh played the conservative role. At what point will the Knicks look for a star in the draft instead of getting a players that will be good role players? With so much uncertainty with the Knicks in the backcourt it’s mind boggling that Walsh would not draft a point guard or a shooting guard. We already know that Chris Duhon can not hack it as the Knicks starting point guard for the whole season. Last season Duhon started the season off strong and ran out of gas. Then you have Nate Robinson who the Knicks don’t seem to want to resign. So what is the Knicks’ future in the backcourt? In today’s NBA it is rare that a team is successful without a floor general. It really looks like Donnie Walsh missed the boat on this one for not taking a risk on a player that could have really made an impact for the Knicks in this up incoming season. Jordan Hill is a player that has not been playing organized ball too long so there is much that he has to work on. I do not doubt he can be a good role player in this league. Right now he is a hardworking player that looks to get better which is a plus. The areas I feel is needs to work on his offensive game. He has to develop more postup moves to be effective. Another area that I can feel can make him a good player is being able to create off the dribble. Right now the Knicks do not have many players that can create their own shot. If Hill can work on being able to create his own shot that make his life easier and making the life of the point guard that much easier. All that being said, it is going to be interesting to find out what other moves will be made this offseason because it is two years in a role that the Knicks passed up on getting a player that could help the Knicks in the backcourt. Overall Jordan Hill is a good player but I just feel the Knicks should have drafted a point guard or shooting guard with the 8th pick. The good news is that Hill can rebound and run on the break if the Knicks want to push the ball. Drafting Hill could also mean that the Knicks have no interest in resigning David Lee who also plays the powerforward spot. There are a few things that we know that Hill has that Lee did not bring consistently every night and that is shooting from the outside. Hill on the other hand can knock down the midrange shot like former Knicks players Kurt Thomas and Charles Oakley. It will be a tall order for Hill to replace Lee’s numbers last season but if Hill can give the Knicks 9 to 10 rebound plus 13 to 14 points in his rookie year I think fans will be satisfied with this pick. Now that Hill is here I wish the guy the best of luck playing in the Big Apple and I can’t wait to see him in summer league. |
