SALT LAKE CITY - Magic Johnson is a minority owner of the Los Angeles Lakers with a vested interest in the Knicks. After all, it was Johnson who, after turning down an offer to run the Knicks, urged executive Steve Mills to hire Isiah Thomas.
His recommendation thus far has backfired famously, but Johnson is confident that Thomas will guide the Knicks into the playoffs this year.
"They're going to make the playoffs and be a tough seven or eight seed," he said. "They're settling into their roles. There's no way I don't see them not getting in as the seven or eight seed, especially in the East."
"It's taken a toll," Johnson said. "This is a guy that has won championships and has always been cheered. It's taken its toll on me. I root for the Knicks.
"When the Knicks are good, the Lakers are good and the Celtics are good, the league is good."
Johnson was at the Garden earlier this season when Knicks fans began chanting "Fire Isiah."
"I cringed the night I was there," he said. "I came in (on Tuesday) to give him a hug. I wouldn't want that on anybody.
