Black Thought![]() 1. One of most underrated emcee's has to be Black Thought of the Roots. The mic slayer known as Black Thought has been holding it down for years. Yet he does not seem to get the props he deserves. This is the same emcee that went toe to toe with Big Pun which is not an easy task. Whether it is written or just straight spitting bars at opponents to make them break into submission Thought comes out strong. In this day and age Black Thought is one of the best to pick up a mic. If anyone has gotten a chance to see the Roots live you will know why I consider Thought to be one of the best ever in today's game. Name any emcee in the game you can watch Thought either coming out swinging or making a tied break. That's just how serious his pen game is. Peep the lyrics on the New Roots album Rising Down Between the greenhouse gases and earth spinnin off its axis Got mother nature doin back flips The natural disasters It's like 80 degrees in Alaska You in trouble if you not an Onasis It ain't hard to tell that the conditions is drastic Just turn on the telly check for the news flashin How you want it bagged, paper or plastic? Lost in translation or just lost in traffic? Yo I don't wanna floss I done lost my passion And I ant trying to climb, Yo I lost my traction They makin' me break, my contents under pressure Do not shake, I'm workin while the boss relaxin Here come Mr. tax man, he leavin a fraction, give me back some Matter fact next pay check it's like that son I'll fuck around and have to hurt a few men They probably chalk it up as a disturbing new trend, Hello Talib Kweli 2. My second choice on the list is Talib Kweli the other half of Black Star. After about 6 albums deep you would think that Kweli would be getting his respect in the game. It seems Kweli keeps getting better and better. From concepts to switching up speeds with his rhyme flow Kweli is on a mission. How many rappers today do you see that keep on making hit albums? Kweli has been spiting bars that will feed your brain cells for months. Rappers that do not have half the talent get their props why shouldn't Talib Kweli? Cormega ![]() 3. Cormega is another emcee that people keep sleeping on. Mega is one of illest to come out of Queens. This emcee that has street cred is also known for his mic control. From his ill vocab to painting pictures that come clear like glass. Mega still proves his doubters wrong. From his debut album, "The Realness" to tracks off the sound track for his "Who Am I DVD. " Any track that Mega is on you have to say he ripped it or killed the track into pieces. Mega lyrics are sharp and more refine than fine wine. Can't wait for his up incoming album this Summer. Emcees watch out Mega is coming for that top spot. Cormega - Therapy Still not convinced Check Mega's verse from the Rap Game on the "Who Am I" Soundtrack [Cormega] My lyrical skills is superior to many arguably Mental energy generate artistry and hip-hop is not deceased, it's dealing with Christ, ironically yet His calm'll manifest it like a prophesy The art was disregarded for economy They played us, it ain't like the labels let the artist eat They bait us with dreams of dreams escapin poverty VMA'ed ya, yet they pay us like minorites Need to raise up like a Quantum Leap Stay up, ain't no time to sleep Save and buy some property, then cop you a V Acknowledge these jewels are conflict-free I style on you when I rhyme and that was just me The last MC on the track with LB (sheeit!) My rhymes are doper than a crackhead's dream I drew more text than Artest's sheet which means even the haters must respect my game Master Ace 4. My third selction is the Brooklyn rhyme spitter that was part of the orginal Juice Crew that goes by the name Master Ace. From his Juice Crew days to his Crooklyn Dodgers days Master Ace has dropped bars to have you repeating the rhyme and verse for years to come. Ace's Creativity is at the highest form. He is also the first person I heard doing that on beat off beat flow to come back smooth. 2008, Master Ace is still hitting the tracks with dopeness. One thing critics can never say about Ace is he doesn't keep up with the times. Ace's pen game remains top notch. Master Ace also a member of the group EMC who dropped an album called, "The Show." Fans need to wake up because there is a hip legend that still drops bars of fire. As I travel through various towns and strange places I see the same scowls and frowns on the same faces The game races and cats try to catch it Before they know it they know death on a first name basis Whether it's slangin' or banging, drinking or smokin' There's bound to be one cat thinkin' of loccin' The hood's like a sitcom Leave ya bike outside, come back outside, I guarantee your shit gone Young cats be sellin' the rock Money busting out they sock mama tellin' them stop But desperate times call for desperate means It all seems so simple when you're just a teen Only take one bad apple to poison the good This for the girls on the block, the boys in the hood And wherever I go it's the same as home It's the H double O D the name is known [Verse Two] They got wild and rough blocks where it's hard to trust cops Get shot on your way to school at the bus stop, damn That kid was a fine scholar Hear his mama whine and holler he died for nine dollars, Young mothers trying to learn the ropes And them one dollar lotto games turn their hopes They keep hoping that they number coming They dreamin' about getting rich driving in they hummer dummin' Old ladies keep they purse in the front Cuz them fiends on the prowl it's the first of the month And you still feel good when you there, yup And you know you in the hood when you there They got one in every spot on the planet And if you wasn't raised there you prolly can not stand it Some call it the hood I'm calling it home And there's love feel it all in my poem…what they got? More Master Ace AZ
You may remember AZ from his classic lines form "Life is a B**ch" but this emcee has been dropping jewels since his 1994 appearance with Nas. In 2008, AZ came back with his album, "Undeniable" which was a slept on album. The album showed and proved that AZ is still that smooth rhyme spitter from the 90's. AZ is that rapper that drops the vocabulary like Rakim at times and comes smooth like Big Daddy Kane.
